01:17:05
Thank you for this afternoon! I'm afraid I have to dash off for a class, but I appreciate so much being able to hear Peter speak. Take care, all!

01:28:15
Related to point above about Freire - but would also include bell hooks and some others - what do you see as the role of education (school/college/university) in the transformation of human relations, and/or in what ways is education part of the problem?

01:46:28
I would be very interested to see the reading list for your course!

01:46:56
On the defunding issue, the argument against that I've heard most is the violence of arriving to domestic abuse situations, and that a social worker would just get themselves killed. I'm not an expert on this so I wasn't able to speak against that, how would you address that issue or can you direct us to specific readings/research that address the practicalities behind defunding police forces and transitioning to specially trained social work professionals on a day to day basis? And I've heard that social work in America "doesn't pay enough" for a private citizen to put themselves in danger like that.

01:49:05
I think one aim of defunding police is to replace police's protection with the one a caring-community can provide. At least, this is what I got.

01:49:28
Your statement on "don't take away jobs from good cops" is what I hear from immediate family in Texas all the time.

My question is actually about issues around the defunding of the police also, but more about the politics of it.

01:54:58
Feel free to send me email and I’ll send you a list of resources on this subject

01:56:11
You can't disconnect the 21st century demand for Abolition (defund the police) to the historical context of the struggle for Abolition of Slavery in the US - it is this history that sets the context for the resonance amongst todays racialized activists of the demand for Abolition

02:05:41
Hi Peter, Really stimulating discussion - I'd like to ask in the context of your talk what do you think is the difference in approach of Thomas Piketty's 'Capital' compared to Manning Marable's 'How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America' and Marable's analysis of racialization and class stratification in 'Beyond Racial Identity Politics: Towards a Liberation theory for Multicultural Democracy? Also do you think there is a difference between WEB DuBois' framing in 'Black Reconstruction' of a "public - psychological wage" in relation to whiteness and David Roedigers approach referred to by another questioner e.g. his Wages of Whiteness '

02:11:52
Thanks Nigel. The topic of slavery/abolition motivated my question: It means, simply put, ‘making an activity unlawful’ . Is the formulation ‘police abolition’ not problematic as many can interpret it as ‘unlawfulness of police presence’ ?
