Hi all, when planning your research and outputs during an expedition don't be guilty of helicopter research - see this paper for more info: https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1009277
Magdalena Butowska
01:01:12
What will be the length of this expedition?
Clara Gyhrs_FCUP (CIBIO-InBIO placement)

Nice to see some invertebrate projects!
Adrienne Amri (she/her)
01:06:25
how many members are you looking for?
Saskia Buijs
01:06:42
What are the most dangerous aspects of the trip?
Glenn S
01:07:02
3-4 new members including a leader
Sarah Williams
01:07:08
Hello !! sorry I did make it Glenn, again having a real life 9-5 job sucks. don't graduate.
Glenn S
01:07:50
ah brilliant, sorry i didn't see your name!
Glenn S
01:08:52
Molly will answer some of these questions as she has been to Guyana before and was leader before me
Molly Davidson
01:10:34
Hi Saskia, the most dangerous aspects are probably being in the rainforest itself as they have quite a few poisonous animals. However the risk is managed by having rangers and local guides, who go everywhere with you and spot dangerous animals and then help the whole team to avoid them.
Molly Davidson
01:12:00
The rangers and guides are also great for knowing the best places to see animals- for example in 2019 I got to see a Harpy eagle nest and chick (from a distance), which the guides had found just the day before.
Amy-Jo Randalls
01:12:59
Is there any additional funding for those of us who may struggle to afford the personal contribution? Or would we have to fundraise for that separately
Sarah Williams
01:14:24
You can fundraise your personal contribution separately :) There is also a travel grant I think available for students from the uni, although I've never been informed if this applies to the expeditions so that might be something you could look into.
Amy-Jo Randalls
01:16:45
okay thank you. Does that mean you may be dropped from an expedition if you fail to raise the personal contribution?
Glenn S
01:18:01
Of course not, if you are worried that be discussed with the team on how best to cover, and i think the uni has several hardship funds to apply to. Don't let it stop you from applying
Gracie Rowe
01:18:12
is it possible to apply for multiple expeditions? or can we only apply to one?
Glenn S
01:18:18
Donald do you know anything more on this front in terms of uni funding
Oliver Lindhorst
01:18:24
Yes you can apply for multiple!
Glenn S
01:19:08
And the leaders for every expedition you apply to will make sure all the best applicants get on an expedition even if it is not your first choice!
Gracie Rowe
01:19:16

Lara Herd

Holly Fraser
01:27:21

Gracie Rowe
01:27:52

Lois M
01:39:31
Yes please apply still, it just means you may not be able to do a diving based project. You need to be a rescue diver before the university insurance will allow you to do diving research.

I'm interested in collecting data for an honours project on an expedition (I'm in 3rd year) but I don't know what I want to do my honours project on yet and don't really know how they work. Would I have to know what I'm doing for my project before I apply to go on an expedition?
