Description
Most people in the UK purchase their food from the supermarket, but conventional supermarkets are not always easily accessible and/or affordable to everyone. In and around Glasgow there are alternative shops available which offer a dignified way to access food. These shops often offer other services as well and can become an important part of communities. During this webinar you will hear from 3 alternative food outlets from around Glasgow to find out how they source food and support people in the communities where they are based:
• Treehills Community Supermarket opened in December 2024 offers affordable items for people from Nitshill, Priesthill and Greater Pollock areas of Glasgow.
• Dig In Community Shop in Govan invites local growers to trade their surplus harvest from the shop and includes a community larder offering free items to the shoppers, as well as cost-price and subsidised fresh produce.
• Blether offers free surplus food alongside minimally packaged dry goods, cleaning product refills, organic fruit and veg and pasture fed eggs. They provide an alternative to the big food companies by only stocking products from small or independent suppliers.
